Design Visit: Peace Paper Project

As part of our Design Visits, we show you places and exhibitions in Hamburg that are of particular interest to designers. This time, you can explore the ‘Minimöbel’ exhibition on a guided tour with design journalist Thomas Edelmann.

What it’s all about

What functions can a chair serve? Do children prefer to move around, swing and play rather than sit still? From a child’s perspective – is a chair even necessary? The exhibition “Mini Furniture: Chairs for Children” at the MK&G focuses on experimentation and play.

The exhibition demonstrates the vast creative diversity in the design of children’s chairs through 130 different models – from the bentwood classics of the late 19th century, through the 1960s and 1970s, when plastic made every conceivable shape possible, right up to today’s models, which are taking children’s bedrooms by storm in the form of animals.

The belief that a children’s chair can be more than just a piece of seating inspires many creative minds. Perhaps because it reawakens the child within them. The objects are certainly fascinating, offering a clear insight into material properties and design possibilities.

What to expect

As part of the Design Visits programme, design journalist Thomas Edelmann is leading an expert tour for the Design Zentrum Hamburg, offering insights relevant to design.

Thomas Edelmann, born in 1963, lives and works in Hamburg. He is interested in the design aspects of mobility as well as historical topics and current developments in circular design. As a career changer, he began writing about automotive, graphic and product design. Designers who work across more than one field pique his curiosity. From 1996 to 2001, he was editor-in-chief of the magazine *design report*, which was published until 2019. Today, he is a lecturer in design theory and history at AMD Fresenius University of Applied Sciences in Hamburg.
