Design Talk: Design for Children
How do we design products and spaces that meet children’s needs? At the next Design Talk, our speakers will show how good design brings together education, safety and creativity.
What it’s about
Children experience the world differently. That’s why design for them presents particular challenges: products and spaces for children must be safe, functional and durable. At the same time, they shape the way children learn, play, move and experience their environment.
At the Design Talk, we’ll be joining three experts from various design disciplines to explore the field of design at the intersection of education, developmental psychology, sustainability, regulation and creativity.
Our speakers
Jörg Meister (industrial designer, consultant and managing director of the Hamburg-based agency little big things) will discuss why children’s products are never neutral and why design always reflects a particular stance. Drawing on his many years’ experience in the toys and family sector, he will highlight the social and economic forces that shape the design of children’s products and turn it into a complex challenge.
Annika Steven and Franziska Cadmus (founders of the design studio Mjuka) will share insights from their work with schools, nurseries and social institutions. The focus is on designing spaces that are tailored to children’s needs and create sustainable learning and living environments.
Marc Oepen (product designer, master joiner and founder of möte) explores the role that design plays in children’s self-directed development. Using the example of the ‘movement playground’, he demonstrates how educational insights and safety requirements shape the design process and how products can become companions in children’s development.
As always, there will be time for discussion and your questions following the talks.
