Who is the workshop interesting for?

In the workshops at the Design Zentrum Hamburg, designers pass on their knowledge of techniques and materials to other designers and design enthusiasts. We give you the opportunity to learn practical skills in working with materials and new techniques for your own design practice. Are you interested in sustainable materials and product design? You want to design products? Then this is the workshop for you. No previous experience is needed, materials will be provided.

What is it about?

The starting point for the workshop is a very special material: bamboo is a very widespread and fast growing plant with characteristics of grasses and of perennial trees. This means that the fiber structure of bamboo is characterized by both great stability and enormous elasticity. Toshiki Yabushita shares his knowledge of the material and demonstrates traditional techniques he learned from a Japanese bamboo master.

What will I learn in the workshop?

At the workshop, after an introduction to the material's properties, processing methods and joining techniques, small objects will be built from bamboo. Whether vases, bowls, spoons or lamps: there are no limits to your creativity. Toshiki Yabushita will take time in the small group to help you create your product.

About workshop leader Toshiki Yabushita:

Toshiki Yabushita learned traditional techniques from a Japanese bamboo master, which he combines with modern product design. With his expertise in bamboo, he not only designs bamboo products such as lamps and kitchen utensils, but also shares his knowledge of the material and its potential applications through workshops.
